Seven other passengers were injured in the crash.
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said the accident occurred early in the morning.
The FRSC in a blackberry broadcast said, “A crash that occurred in the early hours of today 03/04/13, around 01.35hrs at Fire Academy, Sheda, involving two vehicles, a Marcopolo luxury bus registered XG. 413 FGG, belonging to GUO Group of Company and a J5 bus (XA 726 NSR) resulted in the death of 18 men.”
It added that 17 of the victims died on the spot while one later died at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.
“Seven persons, including two females and five men, were injured in the accident,” the FRSC said.
“The injured were taken to the University of Abuja General Hospital, Gwagwalada. A total of 96 persons, 70 males and 16 females, were involved in the crash. Fourteen of the corpses are presently in the morgue of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, while four were deposited at the Kwali General Hospital,” the FRSC statement added.
The commission said N217,000 cash was recovered from the wrecked bus, and promised that the money would be handed over to relations of the victims.
“The FRSC wishes to urge those whose relations travelled through the Kano–Lagos and Lokoja–Sokoto routes to check the Kwali General Hospital and University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada for identification and collection of the corpses.”
The statement appealed to motorists to avoid night journeys because of the dangers associated with such trips.
